Gurupurab: Celebrating the Light of Guru Nanak

Gurunanak Jayanti, also known as Gurupurab, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He was born in 1469, Raj bhoi di Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan). This festival is Celebrated on the full moon day of the kartik.

This sacred day is deeply significant for Sikhs and who honour Guru Nanak's teaching of equality , compassion and devotion.

    The celebration begins with an Akhand Path, an uninterrupted and continuous reading of their holy book "GuruGranth Sahib" for 48 hours at Gurudwaras(Sikh temples). 

      Processions, or Nagar Kirtans follow with devotees singing hymns and carrying the Sikh Flag. 

        

         One of the most important is the community kitchen or Langar, many gurudwaras offer. It serves free meal to all embodying Guru Nanak's principals of service and equality. 

In India Guru Nanak Jayanti is a public holiday recognised by the Government. Schools, colleges, government offices and many private organizations are closed on this day allowing people to participate in the festivities.
